我师王培生先生在上世纪80年代初对太极劲的解释，至今仍令人深思。本文节选其论述“懂劲、走势、化劲”三者的要义，以供读者细究。

【懂劲】懂劲与听劲紧密相关。什么是懂劵？拳谱中明确指出：“每见数年纯功不能运化者，双重之病未悟耳。”一旦掌握了懂劵，其精髓将愈发深远，进步也将更加显著。如何理解这一点呢？首先要明白阴阳，即太极的道理。在面对对方时，要洞察彼此的长短、强弱，用已知之长击敌之短，只有这样才能百战不败。两人必须相互呼吸合一，称为“彼此呼吸成一体，牵动往来得自由”，并且需要根据时间的早晚采取恰当策略。“左重则左虚，右重则右杳”，“随屈就伸”，即让对方无法顺利出力，让他们不断地接近气而无法憋住气，从而失败。此外，“阴阳相济方为懂劵”。随着屈曲或伸展，我们应领导对方的力量点（根节），截断其末端节段，即“舍己从人”。

【走势】三十立计，与其不动，不如主动行事。这意味着我们应该如何走，以及如何让我们的行动被接受，而不是被阻止。一旦掌握了懂劵，我们才能真正走得开。“能粘能走方为懂劳”，这表明粘和走是不可分割的一部分。当别人刚猛时，我柔软；当我顺应别人的后背时，我便成为粘附于他身后的力量。这两种状态结合起来，就形成了一种独特的太极拳技巧——圆圈形态，其中既包含了走，也包含了粘，这正是太极拳本质区别所在。walk for resolving, stick for attacking; walk represents softness and stick represents hardness.

【化练】为了达到Walk, merely walking is insufficient; we must also transform. Transformation is closely related to release. It means breaking through the opponent's attack at the point of contact, seeking change in the midst of contact. All martial arts seek to master this point of contact, aiming to create transformation and avoid being pinned down by the opponent. Without understanding this point of contact, one cannot achieve true transformation.

In essence, our own transformation resembles a rubber ball rolling in water - it cannot be grasped at its center but constantly changes direction. The opposing force must have a certain degree of elasticity or expansion power so that when pressed upon, it can roll away from the center instead of being held down by it.

The phrase "one-point-in-the-middle-seeking" refers to two people clashing and seeking change precisely at their point of contact if they are not able to transform freely they will be hit off balance. Therefore, transformation means preventing the opponent from penetrating our core and changing his trajectory accordingly.

Both parties should maintain their transformations while walking and sticking together without losing focus or leaving each other behind. One must not run away as this would allow the opponent to chase after them; slight rolling motion constitutes transformation itself.

By maintaining a consistent interface with our opponent throughout - often referred to as "cutting face" - we make it difficult for them to find an opening against us."
